So every time you accrue more interest with each payment, the additional interest is added on to that total amount. Generally speaking, the longer you’re stuck accruing interest, the more it compounds on that interest rate, so you’ll wind up owing a considerable amount more money.

Your interest could compound monthly, yearly, bi-monthly… it all just depends on the type of loan, and what was agreed upon when you accepted the terms of the loan; so take note.

P = principal amount (the initial amount you borrow or deposit)

r  = annual rate of interest (as a decimal)

t  = number of years the amount is deposited or borrowed for (term/time)

A = amount of money accumulated after n years, including interest.

n  =  number of times the interest is compounded per year (how many payments you make where interest is due)

The lender might quote you at two different types of interest rates, so it’s important to pay close attention to how they phrase it. There is Annual Percentage Rate (APR) and the Annual Percentage Yield (APY). They mean different things for you. Sneaky, right? Definitely annoying.
